Catholic Relief Services Support Abortion

We had hoped that since this letter was originally drafted, there might have been changes made in Catholic Relief Services.  Not so.  "Catholic Relief Services Support Abortion."  That is an irrefutable statement given the evidence presented by Judie Brown of American Life League.  She has published an Open Letter to the Catholic Relief Services about their support of Abortion and other forms of murder of the Unborn.  We support her efforts and are going to publish this open letter in it's entirety on this Blog.  We also offer a LINK to the 250 page document that spells out the actual support the CRS is giving to the Abortion Industry in the form of Grants from YOUR contributions to Catholic Relief Services.  This will turn your stomach.  A "Catholic" organization, supported by YOUR BISHOPS in the USCCB giving aid and comfort to the MURDERERS of the unborn. And further statements that indicate just how far away from Catholicism CRS actually is:
Catholic in name only?
Friday, September 19, 2014 - By Rob Gasper
Catholic Relief Services is in hot water again, this time for comments by Bill O’Keefe, CRS’ vice president for government relations and advocacy. O’Keefe stated in an interview that CRS is “proud” for not attempting to engage in discussions of the Catholic faith. ALL’s Michael Hichborn commented, “The bottom line is that there can be no division between charity and the work of evangelism. But CRS just stated that it is ‘proudly’ doing just that.”

AND...one more for good measure.
The Lepanto Institute has reported evidence that Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the overseas aid agency of the US bishops’ conference, provided support for a sex-education program that encouraged contraception and masturbation, and endorsed the work of Planned Parenthood.
According to a report from the Lepanto Institute, CRS worked to implement a sex-education program entitled My Changing Body with young people in Rwanda. The program, developed by Georgetown University’s Institute for Reproductive Health, is designed for adolescents. It provides ample evidence about contraceptive use—referring students to Planned Parenthood for further information—and encourages acceptance of masturbation.
The Lepanto Institute was founded to investigate links between Catholic organizations and groups that promote policies incompatible with the teachings of the Church.

Next, we will post the Executive Summary page from the report and then the actual letter written by Ms. Brown.  Please pray for our Bishops and CRS this year as they request your money for the "Bishops Relief Fund" and of course, the Easter "Rice Bowl."

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Over the course of the past year, several news agencies and pro-life organizations have charged that Catholic Relief Services is funding
organizations that undermine Church teaching on human life and morality, as well as authentic, integral human development. Given the
public discourse regarding this funding, there remains a great deal of confusion about the nature and extent of the problem, perhaps even
doubts that there is a problem at all.

The purpose of this report is to provide the facts. The evidence supports that the problems are real and exhibit a clear and present danger of
grave scandal. According to CRS’ IRS Form 990 for FY 2012, CRS granted over $75 million to 47 different organizations based in the United
States. This report documents that $64,656,809 went to 23 organizations that promote practices and policies contrary to Catholic moral
teaching. This represents 86 percent of CRS’ domestic grants for 2012.

These offenses include:

• the facilitation, promotion, and in some cases, direct commission of abortion;
• dispensing and promoting all forms of modern contraception, including abortifacient drugs and devices;
• facilitating, promoting, and in some cases, direct commission of male and female sterilization.

To be clear, CRS is providing funding and partnering with organizations that directly subvert Catholic moral teaching. The activities of the CRS
grantees detailed in this report are not due to coalitions, associations, or tenuous relationships—they are performed directly by CRS
grantees. In all cases, these activities represent the focus of these agencies, and in many instances, they are the preponderance of the
grantees’ work.

This large collection of evidence demonstrates systemic problems at Catholic Relief Services.

American Life League has met privately, on more than one occasion, with CRS executives. All grave concerns have been routinely dismissed.
For this reason, American Life League is compelled to present this fully documented report to the body of the faithful. The sincere hope is
that the findings in this report will bring proper understanding and clarity of the facts.

The intent of this report is to help equip the shepherds of the Church to diagnose the problem and swiftly and resolutely take corrective
action. Hopefully, that will allow Catholic Relief Services to bring the fullness of charity and truth to those in most need of aid throughout the
world.

The Open Letter

Dear Catholic Relief Services,
My heart sank when I read your response to our report about the organizations you have been funding.
CRS is an organization with a long and virtuous history of giving aid to those Mother Theresa called the poorest
of the poor, and I am heartbroken by your general dismissals and justifications for the grave concerns we and
other pro-life organizations have brought to your attention.
As a lifelong Catholic deeply committed to all of the doctrines of the Church, whether it be about aid to the
poor or the Church’s teachings on human life and sexuality, I simply do not understand why CRS is so devoted to
funding organizations driven by the idea that the elimination of children is the solution to the problem of poverty.
I was happy to read last year that CRS would never fund Planned Parenthood. In an interview with
LifeSiteNews, CRS said that “there’s a threshold in terms of what the focus of an agency is, and the
preponderance of their work.” However, every statement CRS has issued defending its funding practices would
give CRS justification to fund Planned Parenthood. There is no discernible difference between Planned
Parenthood and Population Services International, which manufactures, markets, and distributes “safe abortion
kits,” and yet Planned Parenthood is barred from funding while PSI gets $2.8 million from CRS. What happened
to the threshold?
In the response to our report, CRS claims that the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and CRS
follow the same rules regarding the funding of abortion and contraception-pushing organizations. However, CRS
fails to explain that the standard for CCHD, set by the bishops, requires of each grantee “the highest standards of
accountability and conformity with the moral teaching of the Catholic Church,” while CRS continues to fund
organizations spreading all forms of birth control. How is this not a double standard?
CRS claims that our agenda is that “CRS and the Church should not engage with the outside world.” This
is simply untrue. All we are asking is that CRS not fund or give a clean image to organizations that attack the
culture of life. Yes, go into the world, but be careful not to become a part of it. Our concern with CRS’ continued
funding of organizations like CARE, Save the Children, PSI, the Futures Group, ACDI/VOCA, ADRA, etc.—all
of which are thoroughly committed to spreading all forms of birth control—is that CRS is giving millions of
dollars and a Catholic stamp of approval to these organizations, simply because they do some good. Funding
these groups is a little like paying wolves to tend the sheep.
Lastly, CRS said, “The real scandal would be not to do this work and to allow our brothers and sisters
around the world to suffer and die.” In no way is American Life League suggesting that CRS stop working to
serve the poorest of the poor. We are only asking that CRS give as much attention to the preborn children,
endangered by the abortifacient drugs and devices dispensed by CRS grantees, as it does to the born babies in
danger of malaria. As I said in the beginning, CRS has a long history of doing great work, and were it not for the
recent discovery that CRS is funding groups that are killing babies and twisting the souls of the people it claims
to help, we would only have praise for CRS’ good works. We do not see how terminating its financial ties with
organizations like those profiled in our report will in any way prevent CRS from conducting the good work that
it has long been known for.
Please, CRS, on behalf of the preborn babies in grave danger of being slaughtered by organizations like
Jhpiego and PSI, and in defense of the millions of men and women whose souls are imperiled by groups like
CARE and Save the Children, I beg you to please stop funding, praising, and giving a clean image to
organizations like the ones in our report.
Sincerely yours in the Lord who IS life,
Judie Brown, President
